The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in 2020 marked the beginning of my journey into consistent running. With gyms and sports facilities closed, I turned to running as my primary form of exercise. I vividly remember gasping for air every few minutes during those initial breathless runs. Little did I know then that these humble beginnings would eventually lead me to accomplish the incredible feat of completing a full marathon, an achievement attained by only 0.2% of the world's population.

Despite my consistent running habits over the past couple of years, the idea of completing a 42.2-kilometer marathon seemed daunting. However, this year, I mustered the courage and followed a structured training plan, ultimately enabling me to run my first marathon in under 3 hours and 30 minutes.

As I reflect on my journey to becoming a marathoner, a few tips stand out as instrumental in reaching this milestone:

1. Sticking to a Plan: Following a structured running plan was crucial. I chose the Nike Running Club's 16-week plan, which held me accountable and provided a roadmap for consistent training.

2. Gradual Mileage Increase: Building up weekly mileage gradually over time avoided any injuries and burnout. My training plan systematically increased my long run distance each week until I could comfortably run over 20 miles.

3. Proper Nutrition and Hydration: Fueling the body correctly is paramount for endurance athletes. I struggled to plan my diet but was trying to ensure a balanced intake of complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

4. Strength Training, Stretching, and Warm-ups: Running a marathon is not solely about covering the distance; it's about preparing the entire body for the demands of the race. Strength training exercises targeting the core, legs, and upper body helped me build the necessary muscle endurance.

After months of dedication and preparation, I was finally ready for my first 26.2-mile race. Crossing that finish line was an incredible feeling of accomplishment. The marathon is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. With the right preparation and mindset, running that distance is an attainable goal, even if it seems impossible at first. Consistent training and commitment make achieving a monumental goal like this possible.
